Hockey World Championship of 2014

2014 IIHF ICE HOCKEY WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN MINSK

On May 9-25, 2014 Minsk will host the 78^th IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship.

The decision on holding the tournament in Minsk was taken at the IIHF Annual Congress on May 8, 2009 in Bern, Switzerland.

Apart from Belarus such countries as Hungary, Latvia, Ukraine and the Czech Republic were the bidders for hosting the world championship in 2014. Latvia and Ukraine planned to construct new venues for the event in Riga and Kiev respectively.

75 members of the IIHF Congress gave their votes to Belarus, 24 members voted for Hungary, Latvia received 3 votes, while Ukraine – 2. One delegate abstained from voting.

Venues

Games of the 2014 IIHF Ice Hockey World Championship will staged at two multifunctional venues: Minsk Arena (for 15,000 seats, commissioned on January 30, 2010) and Chizhovka Arena (for 9,600 seats, to be completed in summer 2013).

Minsk Arena was highly praised by the IIHF officials and stars of the world hockey.

Hotels

14 hotels with the capacity of 3,756 beds will provide accommodation for official participants of the world championship.

Tourists will be accommodated in city hotels, hotels based at sports and recreation facilities of Minsk and Logoisk districts, and university hostels.

The reconstruction of a number of hotel complexes is planned within the framework of the preparation for the event.

Transport and Infrastructure

An additional runway as well as new servicing terminals will be constructed at the National Airport “Minsk”

All the major roads of Belarus will become four-lane ones.

Four new traffic intersections are to be built in the vicinity of hockey arenas.

The network of subway stations was expanded in 2012.

New intercity trains appeared in Minsk in 2011.

Visas

In January 2012, President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko signed a decree on visa-free entry to Belarus for official participants of the world championship and foreign tourists for the period from April 25 to May 31, 2014.

The ground for visa-free travel for tourists is the presence of the original or an electronic ticket for the championship matches.

Security issues

There is no problem of terrorism in Belarus, while the level of crime is stably low.

The population of Belarus is tolerant and hospitable.

The Interior Ministry together with the Emergencies Ministry, the Ministry of Health and the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association have developed a system of additional measures to ensure security at the world championship.

Do you speak English?

Not all residents of Minsk can speak foreign languages. However, a large number of volunteers, who speak foreign languages, will be working during the World Championship. They will help the participants and guests of the championship.

Logo

Back in 2008, the Belarusian Ice Hockey Association announced a contest for the logo of the championship.

About 200 applications were submitted for participation in the contest, but in the end the choice fell on a laconic image, designed by Victoria Adamovich. According to her, the task was not an easy one, because it was necessary to combine hockey theme and national colors, to make the logo dynamic, bright and memorable. The presentation of the logo was held in March 2009.

Mascot

The World Championship already has its own mascot. This is a bison – one of the symbols of Belarus. So far it has no name. The Belarusian Ice Hockey Association will announce a contest, and then it will be possible to call the mascot by name.

Everyone is welcome to take part in the contest. The winner will receive a ticket to the World Championship as a prize.

Recreation

The capital of Belarus is a great place for varied recreation.

Every guest of Minsk can easily choose an activity to his or her liking. Pools, sports clubs, fitness centers, clubs for bowling and billiards, water parks, beauty salons, sunrooms, horseback riding facilities – for some, casinos, restaurants, bars, cafes – for others, excursions, movies, theaters, museums, galleries, concert halls and parks – for the rest.
