Oktyabrski
Introduction:
Oktyabrski is a young town with a population of eight thousand people. In the early 20th century it served as headquarters of the so-called Rudobelka Republic that was set up to protect the newly-established Soviet regime from the White Guards and invaders from Germany and Poland.
Geographic information
Oktyabrski is located 190 km away from Gomel on the bank of River Neratovka. Railway lines link the town with Zhlobin and Rabkor and motorways connect it with Glusk, Ozarichi, Parichi and Korotkevichi.
History
Oktyabrski town appeared in 1954 as a result of the merger of three villages — Karpilovka, Rudobelka and Rudnya.
Rudobelka village was first mentioned in chronicles in 1507. It used to belong to various noble families throughout its long history.
In 1918-1920 the village hosted the headquarters of Rudobelka Republic.
On June 28 1939 Rudobelka became the centre of an administrative unite (a district).
Famous people
Rudobelka is the birthplace of M. D. Lapa who took part in the Russian uprising of 1825 (the Decembrists’ uprising) and L. E. Odintsov, an organizer of Minsk underground patriotic movement.
