Zhlobin

The town of Zhlobin is located 83 kilometers away from Gomel on Gomel-Bobruisk motorway. Railways connect it with Gomel, Mogilev, Minsk and Kalinkovichi.

Zhlobin district was first mentioned in chronicles in 1492. The land then belonged to the powerful princely family of Khadkevichs. The wooden castle of the princely family surrounded by an earth rampant was built on the bank of the river Dnepr in the 15^th century. It survived several sieges during the war between the Great Principality of Lithuania and Russia. Eventually it was ruined in the middle of the 17^th century.

Two rail lines gave a fresh impetus for the town development. Later there was founded the Belarusian Metallurgical Plant in Zhlobin. Today 20% of local residents work at this plant, and Zhlobin is rightly considered to be the metallurgical capital of Belarus. The town celebrates Metallurgist Day every year (second Sunday of July). Another annual holiday is Zhlobin day (June 26).

There are two museums in the town: the history museum and the museum of the Belarusian Metallurgical Plant.

Other places of interest include a sports center with an ice-rink, a 50-metre-long swimming pool and an aqua park that will be commissioned in the middle of 2007. The construction of the center is funded by the Belarusian Metallurgical Plant.

Pridnestrovski recreation park situated on the Dnepr bank offers a lot of amusement facilities for children and adults. The park regularly hosts a dancing party called Kletka.

There are several specimen of ancien architecture in Zhlobin, including the Holy Trinity Church, the palace in the village of Krasny Bereg, the Svyato Pokrovskaya Church (1807) in the village of Streshin.

There are two hotels in Zhlobin: Slavyanskaya and Yubileinaya. In addition, there are four restaurants and nine cafes.
