Disna

The town is located in the northwest of Belarus 45 away from Miory, Vitebsk Region at the junction of the rivers Disna and Zapadnaya Dvina. Motorways connect Disna with Miory and Polotsk.

Disna was founded by the Slavic tribe of Krivichi. Initially it served as an outpost on the Zapadnaya Dvina. The town was several times attacked by crusaders and survived a major siege organised by the Magister of this order in 1377.

In 1563 Disna became part of the Great Principality of Lithuania. In 1569 the town received Magdebourg Right. In 1579 king Stephan Batory visited Disna to examine the local troops before a campaign against Polotsk Principality.

Much of the town was destroyed during the Great Northern War (1700-1721). In 1793 Disna became part of the Russian Empire, and Alexander Menshikov, the famous companion of Peter the Great, was appointed its prefect.

In 1918 Disna was occupied by German troops, and in 1919 the town was captured by Polish army. In accordance with Riga Treaty, in 1921 Disna became part of Poland.

Despite being Belarus’ smallest town, Disna has a great tourism potential. Local attractions include the ruins of the ancient Upper Castle, a 100-year-old bridge, a steamship, several churches and old buildings.

The town is located in a picturesque place not far from Yelnya nature reserve that contains Europe’s biggest swamp and the remains of a post-glacial desert.

The reserve offers a unique chance to observe various animal species in their national environment. Tourists can also go fishing, gather mushrooms and berries, and even honey. In addition, there is a possibility to take a guided tour of Belarusian countryside (Zautye-Yazno-Perebrodye) or taste delicious local cuisine during a gastronomic tour.

Disna is famous for its old brewing traditions. Here you can taste the true Belarusian ale — a delicious unfiltered sort of beer without preservatives or artificial flavors.

Taking part in Dvina-Daugava tourist project, Disna may soon expect a large inflow of tourists from Scandinavia who will undoubtedly take interest in historic excursions like From Scandinavia to Greece and The Castles of the Great Principality of Lithuania.

The town regularly hosts plein air arts festivals. Other prominent annual events include Yablochny Spas (Apple Feast) and popular folk festivals.
