A nineteenth century architectural monument, the Gatowski Farmstead is one of the gems on a string of the Golden Ring of Gomel tourist route.
The farmstead was originally owned by Lieutenant-General Mikhail Gatowski of the Russian Engineers Corps. The farmstead was then surrendered to Vikenti Kozell-Poklewski as a dowry for Maria Gatowski.
It was Vikenti, the successor of valuable property in the Urals and in Siberia, who contributed to expanding and technologically developing the farmstead. It was he who built the palace, a distillery, set up a beautiful park with birch and lime alleys and a brick arch gate.
The palace is a combination of styles — it combines traces of neo-gothic and neo-renaissance architecture. The palace used to have a gallery of valuable paintings, including works by Aivazovski, Semiradski and Kondratenko.
The English park next to the palace is a marvel of garden engineering. It combines fir, larch, silver fir, oak, lime, chestnut, red fir and other tree species arranged in such a way so as to combine the evergreens with those that change colour in autumn.
